Carp Trade Luke Weaver and #14 for Gregory Soto and #12

The Carp got one more trade in under the wire at tonight's deadline, making a deal with their dreaded rival Richmond Red Dawgs --the current favorite to win the whole thing. The trade was RP Luke Weaver, the #14 pick, and $20 FAAB for RP Gregory Soto and the Red Dawgs 1st round pick (which will fall somewhere between 9th and 12th).
It's not exactly a blockbuster, but definitely more along the lines of what I expected for today's deadline --unlike this morning's trade which was quite a bit bigger than I anticipated.
Soto was just booted out of the Pirates' closers role for Weaver in a trade at the MLB Trade Deadline, so there is an immediate gap there between the trajectories of these two arms. Weaver is the better reliever (1.80 ERA, 0.844 WHIP), but Soto strikes more guys out and still has a leverage role in the bullpen, so it's not a complete wash.
But the reason the Carp made this deal is yet another 2027 1st round pick. The value of this is diminished because their 2nd round pick is guaranteed to be #14, and since the Dawgs are the favorites, they likely end up with the 11th or 12th pick. So, the Carp only jump a few spots, but it's another 1st round asset to play with in the offseason.
The Carp wrap up their first trade season with six more 1st round picks over the next three years than they started with --just wild. We'll do a final accounting next week; the Carp traded a lot throughout the year and we here at Life on the River Bottom are astounded at how profitable these deals look for the future of the Carp.
